The Former Giichi Tanaka Residence stands beside the Hashimoto River in Hagi. Associated with Giichi Tanaka, Japan’s twenty-sixth prime minister, the house preserves the refined character of a modern Japanese villa: tatami rooms, glass-lined corridors, deep eaves, a courtyard and long views toward the water.

A house connected to Hagi’s modern history
Before becoming Tanaka’s residence, the site was associated with Takamasa Obata, who encouraged the cultivation of summer oranges as a new source of income for former samurai families. The neighbouring citrus park keeps that history visible in the landscape.

Tatami rooms and a view of the river
The formal rooms of Gosho-kaku combine tokonoma, shelves, shoji and tatami. A pillar made from an old plum tree introduces an expressive natural element. Upstairs, the rooms open toward the Hashimoto River, extending the interior into the wider scenery of Hagi.
