SCROLL

THE STORY

A photographic tour of the Important Cultural Property Kikuya Residence, with its early Edo-period house, earthen-floor kitchen, storehouses, tatami rooms and gardens.

Kikuya Residence is a large merchant house with a history of roughly four centuries in Hagi. The Kikuya family served the Mori domain as official merchants, while the residence also received shogunate inspectors and distinguished guests.

An Important Cultural Property

Five buildings—the main house, three storehouses and the former kitchen—are designated Important Cultural Properties. Their earthen floors, timber structure, tatami rooms and collections reveal both the business and domestic life of a powerful domain merchant.

Rooms opening to the garden

Tokonoma, hanging scrolls and carefully placed furnishings give the tatami rooms a composed formality. Doorways and verandas then open toward intimate courtyards, allowing filtered light and greenery to extend the rooms.
